Gary Rowett has every reason to be pleased with his summer business so far. The Birmingham manager has been proven right in waiting for quality players to come to the club. Jon Toral was a late addition, in on loan, and the Blues boss is happy with the goals he has brought.

‘That’s two in two league games now, and that’s why we brought him in. We felt we needed a little bit more of a threat in those front areas, in terms of our goal ratio.’

Toral has burst onto the scene with Birmingham this year. Scoring 2 in 2 for the Midlands team. Both Burnley and Reading have already found it difficult to face the Spaniard.

There is a long way to go in the season just yet, but it would seem that the loanee has made that position behind the striker his. This added competition is likely to spur on Andy Shinnie, who has recently signed a new deal. But as of the first two games it is difficult to see where he will fit in just yet.

The Scottish attacking midfielder has been with Birmingham since 2013 and only found the net 4 times.

A long standing problem with Shinnie has been his eye for goal, something he recognised himself in pre-season. Given that Toral has game in and opened his account so soon really does pile the pressure on.

Jon Toral spent last year on loan with Brentford, but has really found form in Birmingham’s system, under Gary Rowett. His early form may well leave Birmingham fans with the seemingly difficult task of accepting missing out on Fabbrini.
