The return of the Welshman

On Thursday morning, Birmingham City winger David Cotterill returned to training at Wast Hill for the first time since his home nation, Wales, were knocked out of the Euros.

The 28-year-old was part of the squad that defied all the odds to go further than any other home nation and because of that, he was given just under two and a half weeks off at the end of the tournament.

However, that break is now over and he has returned to training, but with a high level of concern over his future with several other Sky Bet Championship clubs reportedly interested in his services after a £1.1 million release clause was discussed in June.

Although I understand there is a release clause in the wingers contract, I do believe that the club would be reluctant to let one of their best players go and if he was to leave, the release clause would have to be surpassed.

Despite the club being reluctant to sell the Welshman, who failed to make an appearance for his country in Euro 2016, I was told by a close source to Blues last week that the player is often seen as a bit of a pain in training and sometimes draws the short fuse out of the management and other players in the squad.

For some people, that may be hard to believe because he looks like a fun and bubbly guy but deep down, most Blues fans have to admit that Cotterill is the sort of player who would get on your nerves because at times he can be a little bit ball greedy.

Yes, his distribution is one of, if not the best in the division but at times he needs to know when to pass it off to another player.

As previously mentioned, there is speculation around the winger leaving the club this summer by I highly doubt he will leave after the build up he has given to Blues fans about his return to training via social media sites Twitter and Instagram.

Personally, I think if Blues want to progress on their 10th placed finish last season, keeping Cotterill fit and happy is going to be key. As it stands, there isn’t a person who can deliver the ball like he can and with goals from set pieces contributing to a large number of our goal tally last season, it would be criminal to let him go.

Blues fans, do you think it is vital for Gary Rowett to keep hold of David Cotterill this summer? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
