Sask’s Thoughts On Hancox

As a fan, it is always a dream to play for the club that you support. The club that you have graced the terraces your whole life. This dream came true to Mitch Hancox.

The Solihull born left back sums up all that is good about Birmingham City. The passion that you feel as a fan is always replicated in the eyes of the rather menacing looking 21 year old.

His heart is always in the right place and he gives every last ounce of energy he has into gaining 3 points after 90 minutes. I can’t fault his commitment from being an 8 year old boy pulling on the royal blue jersey, to being a man, he has earned the respect of his fellow fans.

The only issue I have with Hancox is that he isn’t that good when he is on the ball. When he is off the ball, his positioning and often his defending is second to none. Despite being a bit stockier than you’d expect a fullback to be. He has decent pace and good strength in order to deny tricky wingers time on the ball.

Having got one year left on his contract, it will be interesting to see if he signs a new deal in coming weeks. As Grounds is a starter at left back, it will be hard for Mitch to make an impression this year. As back up, he will have to take his opportunities when they come in order to impress Rowett.

Compared to other players, he isn’t the most refined. He is your every day orange cordial compared to the deluxe champagne but this rough and ready attitude has allowed him to thrive in pressured situations especially in derby games.

The main attribute that he needs to work on is his passing. It is almost guaranteed that every game he will make at least one dodgy pass in a dangerous position. Something that Grounds, who I have deemed ‘Mr Reliable’ wouldn’t do.

As a left back, he is also expected to contribute to attacks and his passing is simply too slow and not good enough to create chances. At 21, it should be a lot better which is a real shame.

I personally would extend the contract as his defending is always competent and if he doesn’t mind playing second fiddle to Grounds then I believe it will benefit the club.
