Opinion: Why Birmingham City should target Premier League outcast to be the next number one

|

I don’t want to necessarily call this my ‘eureka’ moment, but I certainly think I’ve found the perfect solution to our problems.

I spoke a few weeks ago about how there seems to be a bit of a trend amongst who the club are targeting when it comes to the goalkeeper position, with the likes of Seny DiengWes Foderingham and more recently Karl Darlow being linked, we want a goalkeeper who is in their mid to late twenties, and has got plenty of experience under their belts.

Well whilst looking around the rest of the transfer window to see what other clubs were doing, it suddenly struck me who we need to go for, and that’s Marcus Bettinelli at Fulham. Bettinelli is someone who fits the description perfectly having racked up 96 games in the division, and is still only 28-years-old.

It looks as if his time is up in London, having been usurped by their current number one Marek Rodak and with them looking at bringing in another goalkeeper this summer in the form of Paulo Gazzaniga, he’ll be looking for work and I think Blues are the prefect destination for him.

Would you like to see Marcus Bettinelli at Blues?

Yes

No

An integral part of Fulham’s 23 match unbeaten run in 2017/18 (the one that we ended) as he was in the top three in both save percentage and clean sheet percentage in the division that season, and whilst those numbers did go down this past year, I still think that there’s enough there that he can be a solid number one for us for this season.

Whether it be on a loan deal, or a cheap permanent one, I really think that this is someone we need to be targeting if we are to take a step forward this year and not leave ourselves floundering with the academy prospects guarding the net.
