Report: Blues turn their attention abroad as they look to bring in Espanyol goalkeeper

|

It’s a step in the right direction, but it’s not necessarily a leap in it either, and that is what worries me.

The discussion surrounding the goalkeeping position at Birmingham City took another twist yesterday, as fresh claims emerged as to who could take the role in the future. We Are Birmingham are reporting that Blues are in talks with Espanyol to bring in Andrés Prieto.

The 26-year-old was predominantly used as a backup last season, failing to make a single appearance in La Liga whilst making six appearances across both the Europa League and Copa Del Rey.

As I said, this would go some way to addressing the problem. I’ve noted before how the club are looking for a certain ‘type’ of goalkeeper, in their mid to late twenties, and with lots of experience under their belts.

How many goalkeepers will Blues sign this summer?

Prieto does have plenty of experience, making nearly 100 appearances across his whole career, but he hasn’t been seen as a ‘regular’ for some time, since the 2016/17 season and there might be a bit of concern when it comes to ‘rustiness’ there for the first few games, similar to how in cricket you want to ‘get your eye in’.

On the whole though, I think this would be a smart move for Blues to make. You don’t play a goalkeeper in the Europa League unless you have some level of trust in him to do well, and I think that level of pedigree would put him in good stead at St Andrew’s.

I just hope that we can get the deal done quickly so that we can give him as much time as possible to get used to being a number one again, with the season set to start imminently, he won’t have much time to get up to speed.

Crazy we are in this situation – Camp improved in a demoralised side late last season and Trueman was more than adequate. At least the inadequacies in defence have been recognised but where are the goals coming from?. With Karanka playing only Duke up front we will be lucky to score one goal per game. Recruiting from the Spanish leagues has not borne fruit for us in the past.
