Blues face Carlos Carvalhal`s Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Boxing Day and I believe the outcome of this result will give a good indication as to whether Gary Rowett`s side can maintain their stay in and around the top six.

Following Wednesday`s 4-1 demolition of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon, they overtook Blues in seventh place but only on goal difference. The two clubs currently sit on 33 points, just one point behind Ipswich who occupy the final play off spot.

If Blues are to have any realistic chance of finishing in the play off places at the end of the season, then these are the games they need to be taking points from.

It is getting extremely tight in the top half of the table with just five points separating 6th from 13th. A win against the teams in and around you will make a big difference come the start of May.

The form of Carvalhal’s Owls had somewhat depleted following no win in five but the thrashing of Kenny Jackett`s Wolves will give them great confidence going into the Boxing Day clash against Blues.

Similarly, Blues head into the game off the back of a much needed home win against fellow promotion hopefuls Cardiff City, so we will also be confident of getting something from the game.

We may also be boosted by the return of David Cotterill and Clayton Donaldson from injury. They may not be 100% fit to start the game but their presence on the bench will certainly give the others encouragement.

It will not doubt be a very tough game against a side that have already beaten Newcastle and Arsenal in the League Cup earlier this season.

The Owls are also up there with having one of the best home records in the league, taking 22 points from 11 games at Hillsborough.

In my opinion, it will do Blues the world of good to pit their wits against Wednesday as a positive result will be a big confidence boost and lead them in good stead for two home matches against MK Dons and Brentford.

Whatever the outcome of the match, it will perhaps allow us Blues fans to decide for ourselves whether or not the squad is good enough to grind out results against the competing best and indeed mount a realistic promotion challenge.

Blues fans, do you agree that the result against the Owls could be a massive turning point in our season? What do you think the result will be? Let us know in the comment section down below!
