Seb Hines has left St Andrews after the parties could not agree personal terms. The defender had spent almost all day in Birmingham.

News broke this morning that Middlesbrough and Birmingham had agreed an undisclosed fee for the defender to move to the Midlands. Despite the deal getting that far talks have broken down and the player has headed back up north.

Birmingham had been in the market for a defender following Gavin Gunning being ruled out for the rest of the season. The club have been unable to replace him.

Lee Clark has been working on a very tight budget this season so this news will not come as too much of a shock to Blues fans. It may be that Hines was unwilling to have his pay come in below the £5,000 a week wage cap. Assuming that much is left in the budget to get another player.

Blues now have until 11 pm to complete a permanent transfer or it will be into the loan market to get another defender into the club.

We understand that the staff have gone home from St Andrews, making any further deals today very unlikely. We could be wrong, though.
