“It was always going to happen”: Darren Bent praises Blues’ decision to get rid of Pep Clotet

The right decision in the circumstances.

That was the message that Darren Bent wanted to put across following the news that Pep Clotet had been relieved of his duties at Birmingham City following last night’s 3-1 loss at home to Swansea City.

Speaking during EFL on Quest’s highlight show last night, the former Premier League man said that the decision to allow Clotet to stay on after his announcement in the first place was a strange one, and that the club had no other choice than to let him go, but remains confident that Blues will stay up all things considered.

“I thought they were safe; I still think they are safe. They’re stuck in a rut. I did find it very strange that he’s come out and said that he was going to leave, and Birmingham have gone on this run, it was always going to happen, so for me I think they’ve done the right thing by putting him on leave now”.

Whilst Bent might think that we’re safe, I do agree with him that the club needed to make the change. It might seem a little bit cliché, but given where things are at the moment for us, we are looking for that ‘new manager bounce’ just to be sure.

Were the club correct to get rid of Clotet at this point?

Yes

No

We may have some leeway in what is going on with Wigan Athletic and the fact that the teams down the bottom aren’t in spectacular form either, we can’t be too reliant on other teams to fall off a cliff like we have, so in these circumstances, the board weren’t really left with much choice than to take the gamble and hope that it pays off.

What about you? What do you make of Bent’s comments on the matter, as well as the decision to let Clotet leave now? And what approach do you think the club should take with Clotet’s immediate replacement?
