Gleeson: I Can Be Good

Birmingham new boy Stephen Gleeson has admitted he waited too long for a move to the Championship but is not worried about being able to cut it at a higher level.

Gleeson has made just two starts for Birmingham and hasn`t played well in either of them. However those starts were against two of the Championship`s tougher teams. Middlesbrough and Wigan. Both of those sides are expecting to push for promotion either in the top six or even top two.

Realistically it will be interesting to see if Gleeson can find his feet starting a more levelled game.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail he said

“I probably spent two years too long in League One, I really wanted to do it (promotion) with MK, but it never happened.

I felt around January that I knew it was time to move on. When Birmingham came in for me it was a no-brainer.

I was not too worried about the football side of it. I`ve always felt I would be OK in the Championship, compete and not look out of place.

The main thing I found when I came was the fitness levels. The lads are tremendously fit. But fitness-wise and football-wise. I`ve got confidence in myself and this was a move that I had to make.

The 26 year old isn`t just in it for himself and isn`t worried about not breaking into the team yet.

Birmingham is a massive club and I just want to do well for them.

I think I can be good for this club as this club can be good for me.

I think the manager has said from day one that it`s not a starting eleven that gets you a good season, there`s 46 games in the league, then there`s the cups, and you need a squad.

He has 24, 25 maybe in the squad and I think every one of those players could be used this season.

It`s not the be all and end all if you don`t play at first.

We just have to stick together and if we can stick together as a squad I think we can do well.

Birmingham play Leeds at St Andrews on Saturday. After a woeful display at Wigan Lee Clark may change it up, leaving Gleeson to wait a little longer for a home start in the Championship.
