Birmingham City manager Gianfranco Zola hopes to add a striker to his squad before the transfer window closes on Tuesday evening.

The Italian is concerned at Blues’ lack of firepower after nine games without a win.

Vital Blues understands that Zola’s previous target, Derby County’s Johhny Russell, is back on the radar but only if Derby lower their £4m asking price for the 26-year-old who has scored 28 goals in 162 appearances.

Other player remain on Zola’s wanted list, including sought after Robin Quaison, but whether any deal gets over the line before Tuesday is unclear.

The Blues manager has signed five players this month.

  • I would go for Zac clough 4MIL offer should get that dune He knows where the goal is he is young will only get better as pace and can play right+left CAM but is best as a CF he would work well with Adams.

  • Ironic isn’t it fellow bluenoses. We wait for 2years for the arrival of TTA,wait for decent money to spend in our first ever transfer money, decide to hire a new manager to steer us ever upward with quality attacking players and this is where we are. This window was to be the turning point and a new beginning with the club stretching its euro.scouting and sourcing with dark days a thing of the past. With Maghoma back and Donaldson soon to appear,I would stick to what we have until the end of season.Poinless in getting a new striker with the club likely to finish at best 11th in the league.

  • 11th in the league to me would be a complete disaster. We have to finish above 10th to show any improvement. But you are probably Wright Brooklyn.

  • Better deals to be had in the summer so i would wait unless something came up that cant be missed now. Maybe finishing lower than 10th is seen as going backwards but sometimes you have to go back a bit before you can go forward and this is a big transition we are going through at the moment, so 20th would do me as long as we can challenge next season.

  • Derby fans think Russell ok …we have some good young strikers coming up but we need time …Russell makes goals also . And is exciting to watch …Hey we need somebody to lift us ..Russell was on zolas list anyway …window closes soon and what happens if the Juke is injured..kro

  • We need a striker desperately but just as desperately we need Zola to get on the phone and call some favours from his Italian defensive coach buddies. Our defence was poor even under GR with defenders leaving players unmarked from set pieces. GR tried to help out the defence by placing two defensive midfielders in in front. We would actually be more solid if we played 352 as 3 defenders would always stay back in a compact unit and have more protection in front.

  • As for Russell and Quaison we will get neither. I heard a rumour about a Juventus striker and Max Gradel still a possibility.
