With a potential deal to bring Bristol City defender Aden Flint to St. Andrew`s coming to a standstill, Blues boss Harry Redknapp may well have a better option right under his nose.

It’s been well documented that Sebastien Bassong is currently training with the club and, for me, it would make sense for Redknapp to offer the 31-year-old a short-term deal.

Bristol City don’t seem to be budging on their valuation of Flint and rather than splashing a fortune on him, why not take a more sensible approach?

I understand that Flint is a very capable defender at Championship level and the rumours over the last month have been exciting for Blues fans, but he really wouldn’t be worth what Bristol City are demanding.

In Bassong, Blues would have a defender with Premier League, Champions League and Championship experience that would do the job just as adequately as Flint.

Granted, he hasn’t played a lot of football recently and he does have the odd mistake in him, but if anyone’s going to get him back playing at a top level, it’s Redknapp.

The pair have both previously worked with each other at Tottenham so know one another very well. I’m convinced that Harry can get Bassong going again.

But let’s not forget, the former Norwich man is a vastly experienced head and when at his best, he is a top central defender.

I for one would take the plunge and, rather than break the bank, pick up Bassong and give him an opportunity to shine.

  • I agree, great article.Flint is way over priced,we are selling Shotton for £3 million, they want £10 million for Flint,he’s not that good, yes he would improve the team,he scores goals however £10 million is way too much.I doubt we will be getting him unless greedy Bristol City knock a few million off that price tag.

  • It’s about 7 million I have heard for flint , I think the board of got to make the decision on how much they want promotion , another 4 million will probably get in downing acquah and flint …I am now impressed and feel better with what we have got but these three for me are the players that will get us over the line ..they who dare wins ..

  • David. Flint would go at £5m. We will not go higher than what we have already offered. Sounds paltry I know, but that’s us.Same goes for Acquah -he would be released tomorrow if they were offered what they want.

  • I think we continue in to the season with the addition of Bassong then if we are still in the mix come Christmas, we go back in with a £5m offer for Flint to strengthen for the final push. I can’t see Bristol involved with play-offs and if we’re pushing on then Flint could force the transfer as so many players do these days.
