Blues should sign-up Bassong rather than break the bank

With a potential deal to bring Bristol City defender Aden Flint to St. Andrew`s coming to a standstill, Blues boss Harry Redknapp may well have a better option right under his nose.

It’s been well documented that Sebastien Bassong is currently training with the club and, for me, it would make sense for Redknapp to offer the 31-year-old a short-term deal.

Bristol City don’t seem to be budging on their valuation of Flint and rather than splashing a fortune on him, why not take a more sensible approach?

I understand that Flint is a very capable defender at Championship level and the rumours over the last month have been exciting for Blues fans, but he really wouldn’t be worth what Bristol City are demanding.

In Bassong, Blues would have a defender with Premier League, Champions League and Championship experience that would do the job just as adequately as Flint.

Granted, he hasn’t played a lot of football recently and he does have the odd mistake in him, but if anyone’s going to get him back playing at a top level, it’s Redknapp.

The pair have both previously worked with each other at Tottenham so know one another very well. I’m convinced that Harry can get Bassong going again.

But let’s not forget, the former Norwich man is a vastly experienced head and when at his best, he is a top central defender.

I for one would take the plunge and, rather than break the bank, pick up Bassong and give him an opportunity to shine.
