Gary Rowett explained on his first day that the most important part of his job was working with the players on the training pitch. It would seem that he has had a positive effect already.

Rowett and his staff have shaken things up from day one, implementing a most physical training session which some of the players admitted to finding tough.

“I am looking forward to working with the players. They were very receptive this morning to our ideas, they worked very, very hard.

“And I have said to them that if they work very, very hard and you have a real togetherness about you I can accept the occasional lack of quality or the occasional misplaced pass and I will try to work with them with that and improve them as much as we can.”

It is not going to be easy to get a group that seems so easy to beat into a tough battling team in Rowett’s image but he insists he will enjoy the challenge.

“Why Birmingham? Firstly, I am always attracted to challenges, and I know this job will be a challenge.

“That`s first and foremost.

“I prefer challenges to the easy life, if you like.

“I also believe there is lots of potential in the team and the squad.

On top of that the new boss detailed an honest account of just why he wanted to take the Birmingham job despite reject approaches made for him by other Championship clubs in the past.

‘ the main reason is the size of the club, the history of the club and that I empathise with the players and the supporters as well because I played in front of them.

“I have been here for some very big play-off games, many moons ago, and I have sampled the atmosphere.

“And it, this job, was just something, as an overall picture, I couldn`t turn down.’
