Why I Like James Vaughan

For regular readers of my articles, you will be bored of hearing me going on about mixing up how we play in order to be unpredictable for teams that are coming to play us. Now, I believe James Vaughan could be the key in adding a bit of unpredictability that we are severely lacking particular against lower teams that just shut up shop before half time.

If James Vaughan’s name is on the team sheet, many will presume that we will play him up front maybe to partner Donaldson. What they won’t be expecting, is Vaughan to play on the left wing. Maghoma I believe has done quite well this season. He has been a handful for most fullbacks and often does look a threat going forward. Not to mention his unquestionable work rate in helping out Grounds in particular.

However, if Vaughan replaces Maghoma, it gives us more of a chance of scoring. For all of Maghoma’s ability, despite his good goal scoring record in the cups, he has been quite wasteful in front of goal. Vaughan has the eye for goal that would be needed if we were to have an extra threat up front. He has a lot of pace and would be able to cut inside and use his favoured foot to have a strike on goal. It seems on paper to be the perfect side.

We would lose the defensive side to the game as Vaughan is unlikely to track back with the same effect has Maghoma but if he is instructed to do so, then I am sure he will do this to the best of his ability due to his high fitness levels and perfect attitude.

If we don’t mix things up, we will end up losing points against teams that try and close the game out from the first minute. The teams that celebrate a draw against us as though they have won the World Cup. But we need to be able to get past this tactic and the only way to do this is to be one step ahead of them tactically. I think that we have to be attacking as we will be on top in these games and the defence has done very well the past few games.
