Was loaning out David Edgar a big mistake for Blues? Should Rowett have told him that he was too important as cover and would have to wait?

David Edgar did not play in Huddersfield’s 0-0 draw with Cardiff yesterday but has otherwise made 4 starts and 1 appearance from the bench for the Championship side.

Meanwhile back at Blues we find a situation where we have loaned out a very competent holding midfielder in exchange for an inexperienced 24 year old in Rob Kiernan who could not fill David Davis’ boots yesterday.

Now I’m not over reacting and yesterday may well be another blip in an otherwise brilliant turnaround by Rowett and co, but in terms of squad management I now have this down as a blunder.

Edgar has played at the top of the Championship, achieved promotion as apart of a good Burnley squad and remains a Canadian international. In fact I was told by our Burnley editor that we’d got a good deal signing him on a free in the summer.

At the age of 27 years old, the Davis injury may well have given him the chance to make his mark and cement a place in the first team. That isn’t a foregone conclusion but its an opportunity that we have certainly missed now.

Edgar expects first team football and that is fair enough, but under a new manager you have to be patient whilst he finds the team he wants to build on, and I don’t think we waited long enough.

January is the time to increase numbers not loan people out in the hope you won’t need them for the run in. Now Huddersfield have a perfectly competent holding mid on their bench, whilst Birmingham do not.

The fans don’t seem to trust Reilly in there (although maybe he needs a chance) and Rowett seems to favor his new loanee based on yesterday’s selection. And yet we could have had a better option than both of them; Reece Brown apparently does not do enough off the ball to be in the first team.

I’m hoping in future squad management decisions Rowett puts the club ahead of the player. This one must be a lesson learnt. Will Edgar come back and make a go at Blues? It doens’t look likely at the moment.
