Thoughts on Stephen Gleeson

At the start of last season, I wrote about how Stephen Gleeson had the attitude of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but with less that 1% of his skill.

I also wrote that he sulked around the pitch like Sulley out of the children’s classic, Monsters Inc.

Now, with hindsight, this may have been harsh. Gleeson has had a couple of good performances in a Blues shirt so far and his work rate has actually surprised me. He never gave up a 50/50 ball and for this he should be commended.

Despite this, I still doubt whether he is good enough for the club. His limited range of passing is very noticeable which restricts the quality of attacking movement.

As a lover of stats, I also have to note that in 41 starts, he is yet to score a goal for the club. Now, I am not a believer that a midfield player should be judged on their goals, but this distinct lack of goals may be an indication that the Championship was a bit of a large step for him.

Overall, I have to admit, that despite some lapses in attitude and the odd wasteful pass, I am steadily growing to like the lad and I would be disappointed if we were to sell Gleeson.

Gleeson isn’t our best midfielder by any stretch of the imagination and at times I’d go as far to say that he may compete for the title of the worst.

But with a good pre-season under his belt, I think that the fitness part of the game will greatly improve and with this, his confidence will rise.

A player playing on confidence can trigger a transformation and in turn a reel of good performances may occur. This happened to Shinnie, so why not Gleeson?

However, I am the eternal optimist.
