Thoughts on Spector

Jonathan Spector for me, continually scuttled under the radar. He goes about his business in a rather smooth and efficient way; putting in a good shift every time out.

His golden locks wouldn’t look out of place in a magazine and this just sums up Spector as a player. By this, I mean that he is not a hard man defender. He doesn’t fling himself at every man, ball or boot.

But this isn’t a bad thing. In a centre back partnership, you need one person who will go and aggressively win the ball and really shove their body around. This role has been filled by Morrison, so Spector has to take a different approach.

The approach that Spector does brilliantly, is to sweep up any balls through the channel or second balls that have to be dealt with. He has the brains of a footballer that are often lacking as a defender.

The anticipation that Spector has means that he doesn’t have to be the quickest, strongest or most agile man on the planet in order to accomplish the job he has been given.

However, it is harsh to say that it is just his brain that makes him a good defender. His 6 foot frame enables him to powerfully clear any aerial ball that comes towards him. Often, he is able to beat most strikers to the ball and this means that the opposition are forced to go backwards.

Spector and Morrison together are a solid pairing and I have full confidence in their ability to match most attackers in the Championship next season. The only problem that I foresee, is that Spector is one of our best right backs too.

I know many of you rate Caddis, and I have realized that I have been a bit harsh on Paul recently, but I believe that Spector is slightly better than Caddis at right back.

Because he is so versatile, it gives Rowett a headache over where to play him and where the team needs him the most. If he is continually played out of position, it may affect confidence and not create the performances we know he can do.
