Shane Lowry- A Smart Bit of Business

Following an unfruitful search for another central defender, Gary Rowett has decided to sign former trialist Shane Lowry until the end of the season. The 26 year old will need to do all he can in order to extend his deal with the club, he has been without a club since leaving Leyton Orient in the summer.

Birmingham have been without another defender after the failed deal for Robert Kiernan earlier in the summer. The centre back opted to sign for Scottish side Rangers. It is understood the player has long term ambitions of reaching the Champions League.

Having seen the transfer window come and go it seems Blues decided it was better to be safe than sorry in terms of numbers at the back. There were no new arrivals in defence despite a shortage of cover should Spector or Morrison take a long term injury.

With the modest Budget being in place at the club, it makes sense to take up a short term deal for cover rather than potentially bring in a player for a fee and a longer contract that is not in the long term plans for the team.

I personally think this is a clever bit of business given the options available to Rowett. Instead of a loan player, who may be less interested to be cover, we now have a player who will be trying to earn a new deal.

Lowry made 42 appearances for Orient last season as they were relegated from League One.
