Selling The Don Would Be Suicide

Not many footballers are described by their manager as ‘undroppable`, but in Clayton Donaldson, Blues have exactly that. The 31 year-old who signed from Brentford on a free transfer must have been up there with the best signings in the Championship. Not only did ‘The Don` score on 16 occasions for Blues, he was also a virtual ever present making 48 appearances. But it was his style of play and conduct that has made him a permanent fixture in Gary Rowett`s side.

Signed by Lee Clark in June 2014, Donaldson spent most of his time as a lone striker, even more so during Rowett`s tenure. The shape of the team, with a number 10 sitting just behind him, suited Donaldson. The ‘man in the hole`, more often than not was Andy Shinnie, and then later in the season Diego Fabbrini, was a perfect foil for Donaldson. Deservedly, the Bradford-born striker picked up a host of awards at the club`s annual dinner including ‘player of the season` and more importantly (for a striker) ‘top goalscorer`.

Donaldson`s impressive displays haven`t gone unnoticed with Leeds United rumoured to be showing an interest. For Donaldson, and Blues, it is flattering that other clubs are looking at the players, it means they are doing something right. But selling him would be suicide for the club who would struggle to replace his quality on such a shoe string budget. While I don`t play particular attention to the football rumour mill, especially during silly season, this is one story that I hope and pray doesn`t happen.

Gary Rowett will be keen to add to his strike force with only Wes Thomas and Lee Novak acting as Donaldson`s competition. It`s is vital for the Blues manager to deter any interest shown in his star striker and I`m sure he will after reportedly going on record to discourage any bids. Keeping hold of prized assets such as Donaldson and Demarai Gray is just as important as adding to the squad.
