Rob Kiernan has cooled his war of words with Birmingham City after reluctantly putting the saga to bed. The defender expressed respect for the club and its staff.

It had been previously revealed, by the club, that due to ‘some aspects’ of Kiernan’s medial, they had decided to pull the plug on the deal at the last minute.

Now in an interview with Sky Sports, Kiernan insists that he has the confirmation email from the club to signify they were ready to complete the deal.

“I was a little bit disappointed it sort of turned sour and the fact that I ‘failed a medical` because I have actually got the email confirmation from the club to my agents.

“I don`t really want to comment on it too much but I never failed a medical, I completed everything that was asked for.

It turns out, provided you take Kiernan’s version of events, that he was ready to sign, but due to a mix up at the club, the paperwork he needed to sign was misplaced and delayed for 24 hours. During that delay Rangers made contact and that lead to the player ending the deal.

Kiernan has revealed that it was the lure of the Champions League by playing in the Rangers resurgence that led to him choosing Scotland over Birmingham.

If that is the players ambition is is completely understandable. If you want a route to the most converted competitions in the world, the gold standard of the footballing world, Scotland presents a far easier road ahead.

In truth, remaining in England would mean that there would be very little chance of a player of Kiernan’s calibre ever seeing that competition. But by going to Scotland, it now becomes a real prospect.

Just how long Rangers will take to get back to the top of Scottish football is still unknown. They’re off to a good start after their recent promotion back to the Championship.

Birmingham are still on the look out for another central defender. Michael Morrison will be a certain on the team sheet next year, and it is now for Rowett to find him a partner, Jonathan Spector is expected to be the rotation defender.

Panos Pavlakis has already confirmed the club are pursuing other targets.
