Sask’s Opinion On The Don

Clayton Donaldson swept up the end of season awards last time out like a child would grab at sweets; he ended up with them all.

But why is Donaldson so effective? And how has he achieved such a high status amongst the fans?

Well, my view is that any player that does their job effectively will always gain recognition from the plaudits come what May. Donaldson is supposed to score goals, which he does; 16 of the little beauties last season.

The remarkable thing that I find about Clayton, however, is not necessarily his goal-scoring but the his ninja-esque qualities. For a man of considerable stature, he often sneaks into the box unnoticed; as though he isn’t even there.

I don’t think he is slow for one minute, but his pace can be matched by defenders so it’s not darting runs that cause him to have so much space in the oppositions box; it’s his incredible timing. Some strikers just have the ability to be in the right place at the right time and Clayton has this inbuilt ability to be able to read the game.

I think that we can sign several strikers who can score more powerful shots and who are more skillful than Donaldson. Lets face it, Donaldson and elegant have never been put in the same sentence together (until now!) But he is a poacher and this is certainly a talent that will enhance the team.

I am a massive fan of Donaldson as a player, but the one thing that frustrates me is that we don’t utilize him as a strong forward. He has the ability to knock down the ball and keep it; but this slows the tempo down.

What I’d like to see, is Donaldson playing with a partner alongside of him. Someone who will run onto Clayton’s flicks and take advantage. Partnerships are effective in the Championship, as seen by the front two of Watford last season, so if this change in formation did occur, than I see only positives for that.
