Gary Rowett was full of praise for his young winger as the player hit three in a 6-1 win against Reading.

Gray found himself in plenty of space when exploiting gaps that the Birmingham coaching team had highlighted to the players during the week in training.

“I thought he put a shift in today – as well as his quality, he actually worked very, very hard for the team, tracked back, helped his full back out and it was a really good performance from him.”

Birmingham are now beginning to enjoy the fruits of Gray’s good talents now that the team is performing along side him. Since changing manager Blues have seen a real increase in form from all of the team.

Developing players is becoming a habit at Birmingham, unfortunately due to scarce financial resources non of the previous graduates remain at the club.

With January just around the corner Blues now have to seriously consider if they are going to put up a fight to keep these kinds of players.

It is Demarai Gray’s first full season starting for the club in the Championship and it would be a real negative message sent out to the football world to cash in on him so soon.

Gray, aged 18, now has 10 starts and 13 substitute appearances for Birmingham. He has 5 league goals for the club.
