Clayton Donaldson was Blues` top goalscorer and best player last season, so why we are even having the conversation about him leaving the club is beyond me. The 31 year-old is vital to the set-up of the team and the way Gary Rowett likes Blues to play. Selling him would be suicidal. Having said that, every player has a price. Unfortunately for The Don`s suitors, they should be forced to pay through the nose if they want his services.
The poxy £500,000 offer made by Reading was an absolute insult and wasn`t worth the paper it was faxed on. Realistically, could Rowett sign a replacement who would have the same affect as Donaldson for that kind of dosh? Yes, Donaldson is 31, but the fact Blues signed him on a bosman should make their situation risk-free. There isn`t big financial gain to be had by selling him and there isn`t a lot to lose by keeping him if he`s unhappy (I am not suggesting he is – just theoretically).
The striker was born in Bradford and supposedly has Leeds supporting family, so I could understand his tentative interest on that front. But Reading? That wouldn`t be a step forward.
If Reading want to continue to make derogitary offers, Blues should continue to laugh. Message to Steve Clarke; for £500,000 we`ll give you Donaldson`s boots. Nothing more.
