Demarai Gray is certainly generating a lot of interest already this season. It is not even December and we are seeing reports of Premier League Clubs lining up for him.
The latest to join the race is Newcastle United. Another team with more than enough money to take the youngster. They have also just completed signings from Nottingham Forest this season and then loaned them back to the club.
Gray has undeniable talent, that is the pure and simple reason why so much interest in coming in for him. He has a goal to his name and some very bright performances this season.
If he was to go, there are plenty of clubs now in the mix. Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle are just a few recent ones. Palace have been trailing him for a long time, Norwich also had a look at him in the summer.
January is going to be crucial. Will Birmingham fend off the bids? Yes the £500,000 offer was rejected in January, but some of these clubs will lay a few million on the table in add ons and payment schemes.
I don’t think Birmingham will be able to say no to one of these bigger clubs. However, I think Demarai should. Nathan Redmond did the right thing in waiting for the right club to come along.
None of the interested clubs look like affording Demarai first team football, and whilst I want him at Blues for selfish reasons – it just so happens that may be the best thing for him as well.
I would not expect Gray to be a Birmingham player much past January. A sad fact that Blues may be unable to resist yet another Premier League club in wrestling a player away from the club.
