Opinion: Vaughan Represents Good Business

If you can`t sign Troy Deeney, turn your attentions to another self-proclaimed Bluenose. James Vaughan checked in at St. Andrew`s yesterday on loan from fellow Championship side Huddersfield Town until January.

Obviously, Blues were never going to sign Deeney. It seems a swap deal involving Lee Novak just wasn`t appealing enough for Watford. So we`ll settle for Vaughan, a 27 year-old Brummie with bags of pace and a half-decent scoring record to boot.

Vaughan has netted 52 career goals from 201 appearances for various clubs. That`s one goal every 3.8 games. That works out at 12 goals per Championship season which is arguably more than the amount Wes Thomas or the aforementioned Novak would conjure up.

But without focusing purely on numbers, Vaughan offers the electric pace that Blues` strike force lack, even when Clayton Donaldson is taken into account.

During Blues` 1-1 home draw against Huddersfield in March, Vaughan caused Jonathan Spector and Rob Kiernan all sorts of problems by playing on the shoulder of the last man and his link-up play was superb. That day, the Terriers played on the counter attack which is the sort of mentality he can expect to be part of at Blues.

A striker was certainly needed and I commented on a previous blog that Blues needed one with a bit of a spark, a bit of pace. That is why Vaughan is a better choice than Villa`s Libor Kozak.
