Ashley Cole has recently spoken of his thought process regarding joining Harry Redknapp down at St. Andrews, and he has admitted that it is a move he hasn`t ruled out.

However is this switch anything other than rumour, and is it likely to happen?

My feelings are that due to Harry`s recent bid for Bristol City full-back Joe Bryan, and the unlikely chance of Jonathan Grounds and Cheick Keita wanting to move on soon, Cole is probably not much more than a rumour.

Links with clubs are rife at this frantic time of the transfer window, and it is hard to see why Blues would lodge a bid for Bryan and need another left-back.

There is little doubt that Cole would be a valuable asset for any Championship side, after all he is a Champions League winner and has a great pedigree.

Some might argue that he may be slightly off the pace if he were to re-join English football from the MLS, but I think the gulf is less than it once was.

The MLS is a growing league; the standard and interest of American ‘soccer` improves constantly. That said, it would perhaps be unwise to bring him in so close to the start of the season.

The double bid lodged on Tuesday afternoon is a positive sign that Redknapp is being supported financially by the board, and hopefully this will materialise into two new players donning the royal blue.

Regarding Cole, this is nothing more than a rumour in my opinion, and we`ve all learned not to take links with ex-Chelsea defenders too seriously this window anyway.

  • It cant be a rumour when you quote the words of the subject. It might be a bit of a media stir but he has stated that its something he would consider and I wouldnt rule it out as his experience and quality would be a great addition to our squad. At this time we have one full back in Grounds who possibly wouldn’t be first choice left back or centre half, but if Shotton goes he could fill the void in the squad. We havent signed a left back yet even though we are alleged to have mad a bid ore two, so at this time we have Grounds and Keita. Keita is still work in progress and will most likely spend a lot of time with the U23’s until he has developed a bit more. He is not a left back in my opinion so even if we sign Joe Bryan from Bristol I think there is still room for another one. I don’t think this deal will happen but Joe Bryan is also capable of playing wide left, so there may be some deeper thinking in this. Its a long season and we need players with quality who can offer a bit of flexibility in terms of tactics and changing games.

  • I don’t know if I agree about this article,Cole wouldn’t be talking about Birmingham City without some form of contact having been made.Sure there is always speculation flying all over the place in transfer windows, reporters spinning stories to sell papers. On the other hand this report makes a valid point, why would Redknapp make a bid for Joe Bryan if he was considering Cole, perhaps he wants Cole when the domestic season in America is finished knowing his club are unlikely to release him at the moment ?
Mention of the gulf between the standard of play closing in,it might be if you compare it to league 1 however Cole is not currently playing at the level of the Championship, without doubt the Championship is currently the most competitive league on these shores. We all aspire to have BCFC in the Premiership,we hope we return there ASAP however this league is more entertaining than the Premiership in terms of almost all teams having aspirations of challenging for a top six spot, there are few exceptions when you look at the teams in this division, the vast majority have been Premiership teams
