Birmingham midfielder Muzzy Izzet has been forced to retire following the knee injury that has plagued his St Andrews career.

The 31 year old had a year remaining on his contract but took the decision to retire and his spell at Blues has been ended by mutual consent.

Izzet, a Turkish international, played only 28 games for Blues, scoring only 1 goal.

It’s a sad end for a player who could’ve been a real asset. Blues fought off competition from a host of clubs including Villa to acquire his signature.

Speaking on the official site, Steve Bruce said:

‘Muzzy has come to the point where his knee is very, very painful and he can’t fulfil what he wants to do.

‘When he signed for us from Leicester, he arrived with an exemplary appearance record and had hardly missed a game due to injury.

‘But he has endured a terribly frustrating time with us and you can’t help but feel for him.

‘We would like to thank Muzzy for his efforts during his two years here and wish him all the very best for whatever he chooses to do in the future.’
