Over the last week or so we have seen Birmingham City linked with numerous names but the ones that stick at the moment seem to be Jonny Hayes, Marc Roberts and Ferland Mendy.

Although we don’t know too much about Mendy, who Blues are reportedly battling for, we do know a little bit about Roberts, Barnsley, and Hayes, Aberdeen.

Down below are what our writers Luke Turner and Rob Wildey make of the trio who have been linked with the club over the last week or so.

Luke Turner

Jonny Hayes – I wrote an article on the site earlier in the week suggesting that we should take a gamble on this player. After such a successful season at Aberdeen, he’s definitely a player that we should keep a close eye on and I would take a chance on him.

We currently lack that out-and-out left footed winger that can play on the left hand side and Hayes would solve that problem for us. He’s not afraid of running at his opponent and we’ve seen that he can chip in with goals and assists when it matters most.

Marc Roberts – Blues are short of centre backs at the club and this is a player that I think we’d all love to see join us.

Not too long ago he was playing at Halifax and he’s now captaining Barnsley in the Championship. He looks extremely promising and at the age of just 26, there is still plenty of development left in him.

He’s definitely the commanding centre back that you’d want in your side who is excellent in both the air and on the floor.

Ferland Mendy – I`m not going to lie, this was a name that I’d not previously heard of before he was linked with Blues earlier in the week.

His value is a reported £7m and with Premier League clubs chasing his signature, I doubt that Blues will be able to compete for him.

He does, however, look like an extremely promising attacking left-back but with Jonathan Grounds and Cheick Keita at the club, you’d have to wonder how all three would fit in. Blues would almost certainly be priced out of a move anyway.

Rob Wildey

Jonny Hayes – It’s not a secret that Blues need more from out wide. But is the 29-year-old Scot an improvement on what we already have? I’d argue that a fully fit, fully firing Kerim Frei could be a huge asset next term.

Saying that, if Greg Stewart, David Cotterill and Viv Solomon-Otabor depart, the need for a wide man would increase.

Marc Roberts – Blues need competition in the centre of defence. Michael Morrison and Ryan Shotton are proven performers but looking beyond the duo, only Paul Robinson offers back-up. Roberts has been a consistent performer in the heart of Barnsley’s back line and his leadership qualities would be be crucial. A resounding yes from me.

Ferland Mendy – I don’t know a great deal about this lad but do Blues really need another left back? Jonathan Grounds is steady and Chieck Keita is an ongoing project with bags of potential. Having said that, I would trust Harry Redknapp to get it right.
