Blues chairman David Gold has promised to ensure the club do not suffer financially if (when?) the club are relegated – and has also pledged that he and the other board members will find money from their own purses for new signings.

Despite Steve Bruce being forced into offloading players to fund potential January moves, the board have assured their manager that money will be available for future signings.

And Gold is also making sure that the club do not follow the likes of Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford into financial oblivion following relegation from the Premiership.

He said: ‘We have always said we will protect this from the plight of horrendous situations at other clubs who have gone into administration because they borrowed money and built up debts.

‘They wake up one morning and the bank manager says ‘I want my money back’ and you go out of business or into administration. We would never allow that to happen at Birmingham.

‘During our tenure at Birmingham, when the going has got tough, the tough have got going and we have come up on a number of occasions with our own money. Our financial contribution has been substantial.

‘The club spent all the money available for players in the summer and any extra money for players now, on top of that generated through people leaving in January, will come from David Sullivan and the Golds.’

Although it is admirable that the board are willing to back Bruce financially, it is vital that the correct players are bought in the transfer window – that is, if it is not too late by then.

With Walter ‘Water Pistol’ Pandiani looking likely to be on his way, two strikers capable of hitting the net regularly are a must – however, these are notoriously hard to come by. With our grip on top-flight status looking increasingly tenuous, and our hands set to be trampled on by the 22 feet of the Chelsea team, it will certainly be a struggle to sign any top calibre players come the transfer window.
