Getting back to basics the key in Wolves victory

Friday nights magnificent 2-1 victory at Wolves can be put down as a result of numerous things but getting back to basics was definitely the catalyst to success.

Blues were gritty, determined and well organised. It was the sort of performance that we haven’t yet seen under Gianfranco Zola and shades of the ‘old Blues` came out.

It’s clear that, if Blues are to progress under Zola and put to bed this horrendous run of form, then being hard to beat has to be the starting point.

We finally received that slice of luck that we needed when Maikel Kieftenbeld pounced on a Carl Ikeme mistake to put Blues into the lead and that really calmed Blues down.

Then came another special moment from David Davis. For the second time this season, he netted against a local rival and this one must’ve been extra special for him due to his past at Wolves.

The way he silenced the South Bank and then celebrated in front of the travelling Blues fans is a moment that I don’t think any of us will ever forget.

The whole team, to a man, were solid and there was no messing about- except for the odd piece of sublime skill from Cheick Keita which he executed wonderfully.

Notable mentions must go to the immense Ryan Shotton, Man of the Match Davis and the tireless Che Adams who ran himself into the ground as the lone striker.

This wasn’t the game for Blues to spend half their time messing around in possession, wondering what to do with it next. Paul Robinson`s sending off obviously changed how we had to approach the second half but it was still the basics that we focused on.

There were also moments where Blues were extremely clever in possession and managed to find space in between the Wolves midfield and defence that gave them some rest bite from defending.

This is just a small step and we mustn’t get carried away with things. It’s crucial that we take all the positives and confidence gained from this result and push on.

This must start against Leeds on Friday evening but, if we capitulate in that, then all of the hard work against Wolves counts for nothing and the pressure will once again be on for Blues and Zola.
