The set-piece conundrum

After a very positive result on Friday evening against local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, Birmingham City host Leeds United this coming Friday but things could return to the doom and gloom.

In the game against Wolves, Blues gave away so many fouls in dangerous situations and they were lucky that the home side weren’t in a finishing mood because if they were, it could have been four or five in the end.

It was worrying to see so many free kicks given away close to the touchline where balls could be delivered into dangerous areas. Wolves did pretty much everything but score from those positions and against a better side, like Leeds for example, Blues would have been made to pay.

If you look back at the games that Gianfranco Zola has been in charge of, Blues have conceded so many goals from corners and other set piece situations and that has to change.

However, with that being said, I just don’t think it will. Zola has insisted that they are working on their set piece defending but as a fan, I just haven’t seen any of that training come into practice just yet.

Blues have to sort this out otherwise they will continue to concede silly goals at times where they should be seeing the game out. The game against Wolves was the most resolute the defence has been since Zola came in and that was great to see and we need to see more of that.
