Five-a-side: Best of both! Sheffield Wednesday

Birmingham City head into the Boxing Day fixture on the back of a hard fought win last Friday night against Cardiff City.

Manager Gary Rowett will be hoping that his side can continue their little run of form (one win, two draws) into the game at Hillsborough, but Blues have to be aware that Sheffield Wednesday themselves are in good form.

The Owls go into the game following a very impressive 4-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers and they look set to provide Blues with a very stern test.

However, Rowett’s men are much better on their travels and a result against the high flying Owls isn’t altogether out of their reach, especially if they play like they have in their previous away matches.

I have looked in-depth at players from both teams and with the help of our sister site, Vital Sheffield Wednesday, I believe I have come up with the best possible team for this week.

GK: Kieren Westwood.

I have opted to choose the former Sunderland shot stopper over Blues ‘keeper Tomasz Kuszczak for the simple fact that he is the home teams number one and I feel he could play a huge part in how Blues get on.

So far this season Westwood has managed to keep five clean sheets, but he does concede an average on one goal a game so Blues are in with a good chance of scoring.

Despite that last statistic, I still maintain my opinion that Westwood deserves to be in this team.

DF: Michael Morrison.

I can already hear fans saying, you’ve already used Morrison two or three times in this series, why don’t you use another Birmingham City defender.

Fact of the matter is that Morrison has been by far our best defender all season and without him we most certainly wouldn’t be where we are now!

His willingness to close down chances, win numerous headers each game and save us until the last minute means he just needs to be in this team.

MF: Barry Bannan and David Davis.

Former Aston Villa midfielder Bannan has become somewhat of a fan favourite at Hillsborough for his fantastic work rate and effort during games.

His creative side might be something that troubles Blues on Saturday, but his goalscoring ability is something that we won’t have to worry about with the midfielder having only recently scored his first goal in nearly two years.

I have included Davis in my five-a-side team even though he may not actually start on Saturday.

Davis has the ability to break play up as well as get forward and he is the sort of box to box midfielder that every five-a-side team needs to have.

Although, like Bannan he doesn’t score many goals, Davis always has the ability to pop up with important goals and I feel this is another reason to put him into this weeks team.

ST: Fernando Forestieri.

The 25 year old Italian attacking playmaker has been one of the buys of the season for me and it just goes to show, you can get a whole different type of player if you have the money to spend.

So far this season Forestieri has eight goals and three assists for the Owls and those sort of stats mean that he is definitely the sort of player that just has to be in this weeks side.

Blues and Sheffield Wednesday fans, do you agree with this weeks team? Would you have included any other players in your five-a-side team? Let us know in the comment section down below!
