Edgar Move Explained

Birmingham City have taken the decision to loan out David Edgar to Sheffield United. The move is not one that leaves short the defence as Edgar see’s himself as a midfielder and wants more first team football than is on offer at Blues.

Edgar has expressed a desire to play more football according to Gary Rowett and the Blues manager explained that the midfielder just doesn’t fit into the set up at the club.

‘He was in the squad as a centre-back, and I am not saying he didn’t want to play centre-back, but I think his preferred position was centre midfield.’

Rowett held out for a deal that was right for Birmingham, the end result is that Birmingham have more money in the pot to add to the squad in other areas; other than the midfield back-up role that Edgar was actually playing.

Now Birmingham may be ready to go and find a player that will suit their needs, or even be able to offer a little bit more to one of the players that already has an offer on the table.

‘We have spoken about it quite vehemently that I would like another centre-half and I would like another striker. They have got to be the right ones, the right timings and the right deals for us but the more money we have got available for those deals then the better.’

It is quite evident that this move is something that needed to happen. A player unhappy with his perceived role at the club and players better in that position as well.

Edgar is at the stage in his career where he needs to be settled at one club. Moves in recent years have not exactly favoured the Canadian as he found himself surplus to requirements at Burnley and then likewise with Birmingham. He also evidently didn’t do enough to convince Huddersfield to make his loan permanent at the end of last season.

The midfielder managed 9(3) appearances whilst on loan at Huddersfield and has failed to cement a place in the Blues team either, making just 14(2) appearances in royal blue.

All in all this one is Blues trading out a midfielder and potentially securing a signing in defence or attack. Which would you prefer to see?
