Could a blast from the past give City a boost in the future? – Opinion

It’s funny where ideas can come from.

This one for instance, I happened to stumble across when perusing through the tweets in response to the club’s message about Cameron Jerome’s birthday. One of the responses intrigued me, so I give full credit on this article to @karllson1992.

Now I’ve said before how I don’t like fans hounding the club Twitter feed, demanding that they ‘announce a striker’ or similar, however, this one wasn’t quite in that vein, though it has a slight twinge of it.

He said that he wished Jerome came back to the club, and after reflecting on it for 30 seconds or so, I must say that I agree with him.

It was well known in the summer that the club were looking for a striker, and they came agonisingly close to getting one in the form of George Puscas. Even though they did make some inroads with the signing of Alvaro Gimenez, the club could still do with an extra body in that department, particularly if the club decides to cash in on Kerim Mrabti, so why not Jerome?

Whilst it’s too late to bring him in now, the club should get some preliminary plans in place to bring him in during the January transfer window.

His record at Championship level speaks for itself. 80 goals in 269 appearances, which works out at a goal every 3.36 games. Extrapolated out over the course of a Championship season, that gives you 14 goals. Now whilst I wouldn’t expect him to start every game when he came back, if you rotated him in with, or perhaps used him as a partner for Lukas Jutkiewicz, then he should be able to get you the odd goal every now and then.

Not only that, but his value, £810k on Transfermarkt should be making him a very hot commodity for not just Birmingham, but a whole host of Championship clubs.

Whilst the club have got off to an OK start in the league, undefeated after two games, there’s still a lack of firepower up front, so why not dip back into the archives as it were, and bring in someone that you know will be able to find the net at this level. The number nine jersey is still free, why not get it filled?
