Birmingham City are reportedly set to sign FC Groningen captain Maikel Kieftenbeld after they met his release clause in his contract.

According to reports on the Dutch sides official club website and the Birmingham mail, the defensive midfielder is set to fly to Birmingham in the coming days for a medical and to discuss personal terms.

Unlike most transfers which have broken down in the past few weeks, Blues boss Gary Rowett will be hopeful that he can get this over the line, but he will be unhappy that the news has broken out.

The former Burton Albion manager expressed his anger at the fact that with every transfer he has gone public with, one thing or another has always gone wrong with it. Blues fans and management will be hoping that with this one, that isn’t the case.

Groningen have given permission to the defensively minded midfielder to speak with the championship side and have therefore left him out of their squad for a preseason fixture against Roda JC on the 26th of July (today).

Blues fans, what do you make of the potentially exciting news? Are you happy to see the club finally doing some business? Or are you skeptical about the fact that it has gone public so early on? Let us know in the comment section down below!
