Birmingham are expected to step in for Sunderland defender Matt Kilgallon as the Black Cats think about thinning their squad after Steve Bruce`s summer spending spree.

George McCartney and Nyron Nosworthy will also be following Kilgallon out of the exit door, but it`s the former Sheffield United star that has caught the interest of manager Chris Hughton.

Kilgallon was signed from the Blades at the start of 2010, but did not do much to Impress, but Hughton see`s the central defender as the ideal replacement for Roger Johnson.

Hughton tried to sign the player when he was at Newcastle, this time he is tipped to succeed.
