Blackpool have signed former Birmingham City devoted servant Colin Doyle on a two year deal. The Irishman had been moved on by Gary Rowett after failing to make the cut for the first team.

The Northern club are under new management since sacking Lee Clark and replacing him with Neil McDonald. Blackpool suffered relegation to League One this past Championship season.

Doyle had been at Birmingham since coming through the academy and had played key parts previously in the Birmingham first team. Particularly in Blues coming back up from the Championship, during the 2006/7 season, after being relegated the campaign before.

However, under Gary Rowett the size of the Birmingham team has been reduced to a much smaller size. Rowett wants quality over quantity and that has meant that backup players who are waiting for first team action are to be moved on. Doyle fell in this category.

He told Blackpool’s official site ‘I was at Birmingham a long time after coming through the academy and the last few years have gone a bit stale because I didn’t play many games there.

‘I want to come here, play regularly and get a full season under my belt. This is a new chapter now and one that I’m really looking forward to getting started.’

Born in Cork, Doyle joined Birmingham in 2003 and made 31 league appearances for the club. His final game came against Blyth Spartans in the much covered FA Cup game back in January. Perhaps his most impressive game for Blues was his heroic performance away at Wolverhampton Wanderers in a dramatic 3-2 win, which included a last minute penalty save.

Meanwhile Birmingham are still searching for a new first team keeper after Darren Randolph rejected a new contract in favor of joining West Ham.
