Birmingham City are close to agreeing a £500,000 deal for Nottingham Forest midfielder Robert Tesche, according to reports in The Sun.

Robert Tesche spent the end of last season on loan at Birmingham and helped breathe life back into Gary Rowett’s side as they found form and climbed to 10th place in the Sky Bet Championship.

Birmingham manager has made no secret that he wanted to keep Tesche, making reference to conversations he’d had with the German and comments made to BCFC.com.

Blues are certainly in need of another central midfielder to improve on the quality in the middle, and it was evident from the German’s loan spell in the Midlands that he was just want Blues were looking for.

The deal is close according to the newspaper, however we haven’t seen anything from the local media which is usually a pretty good measure of how true a story is.

We know there is interest from Blues and there hasn’t exactly been commitments from Forest that they are going to keep Tesche.

As always there are several factors at play for Birmingham City. The BIHL company that owns the club has recently identified new investment and received a running capital loan and this may have been the green light for transfers to begin.

Although we were told at the end of the season that Panos Pavlakis has the funds in place to strengthen the team as per Rowett’s request. These funds aren’t expected to be massive but if this is a deal going through at £500,000 then it is a signal of intent from the club’s owners that the club is to be backed as much as possible.

It has been years since Birmingham City have spent real money on quality players, and it has been even longer since they have been able to reject bids of significant amounts from poaching clubs – both may be a thing of the past. We shall wait and see.

Robert Tesche joined Nottingham Forest last summer before falling out of favor with the first team selection when they changed manager and brought in Dougie Freedman. The Wismar born German made 12 appearances for Birmingham, scoring 2 goals.

At the age of 28, he would be a perfect leading figure for the new Birmingham City drive forward. Tesche scored the final goal of the season for Blues, giving them a 1-0 win away at Bolton.
