Birmingham’s Battle to Keep Gray

Birmingham City are again having to deal with national media reports that Demarai Gray is set to leave the club. The Guardian have claimed that Leicester City have activated a release clause in the youngsters contract. However local outlet the Birmingham Mail have revealed this is not accurate.

This of course isn’t the first time that national or non-local outlets have claimed something wide of the mark. The Liverpool Echo also claimed that Liverpool had a special deal in place with Blues for Gray and Brown as a part of the Jordan Ibe loan deal.

The transfer window is rapidly closing and as teams (and the media) look to cash in on the window these stories will arise quite regularly. What fans need to bare in mind is that Gray has now signed a new deal and even if there is a release clause in there, the fee is likely to be a healthy one.

There is no doubt this will not be the last story we see about Gray and Leicester may well actually come in with a bid. I have a feeling Birmingham will want to reject bids quietly if they can. Although news is often leaked by the bidding club.

One day Demerai Gray will be in the Premier League, given the way he plays the game and his pace, it is a matter of time. And, should that not be with Birmingham City, I’m sure he will fetch a very good fee. At this time there isn’t any compelling evidence that Gray is leaving.

A final note is that the new Premier League money kicks in next season and we could see some bids that are of a level we haven’t seen before.

Are you confident the club will fight off interest?
