If I had to write another match report on a 1-0 defeat for the Blues’ Ladies, then I was considering leaving the country. As it stands, I am sat in sunny England with a huge smile on my face.

The game started at lightening pace which was to be expected as both teams were desperate for the 3 points. Birmingham Ladies had only got 3 points all season and so to double their tally would certainly give a confidence boost.

Carney and Potter, who had linked up well on England duty just a couple of weeks ago, were showing no signs of their partnership deteriorating. Within minutes they combined to have the first shot at goal.

Just after this, Birmingham Ladies scored. Potter and Carney were both involved. After a few silky skills, Potter chipped the ball and this was stopped by the hand of Harris, the Liverpool defender. Carney stepped up and placed the ball beyond the Liverpool ‘keeper, Stout.

Lawley, who is a young talent, showed her pace throughout the first half. Around the 30 minute mark, she outpaced the full back before finding the striker, Linnett. She did brilliantly to control the ball and unleash a shot but Stout was equally brilliant in defending her goal.

Lawley was controlling the game at this point. In the next phase of play, she ghosted past several Liverpool players but just couldn’t find the power in her shot. Glimpses of the talent that we have.

Blues’ were looking very comfortable but Katrin Omarsdotir completely against the run of play struck 30-yard shot that was inches away from going underneath the crossbar. A let off for Birmingham.

As the second half starts, Potter, Moore and Allen continued to pull the strings. Potter and Allen going close to scoring in the opening few minutes. Stout again proving to be a wall in the Liverpool goal.

However, as the minutes ticked by, the Reds started to boss the game. Hodson almost equalized for the visitors but her shot narrowly missed the post.

The game was turning into an attack vs defense situation; Birmingham limited to playing on the break. This resulted in pinball in the penalty box three times but the resolute defending ensured the clean sheet was preserved.

On the break, Birmingham Ladies had several chances to put the game to bed but the finishing was wayward, not for the first time this season.

Full time came to the relief of all involved with Birmingham Ladies. Their first win of the season and hopefully the first of many victories to come. The defending was a particular positive; Mannion and Harrop were particularly impressive with Lawley as the player of the match.
