Russell Slade, manager of Cardiff City, has described rumours he is set to sign David Cotterill as ‘wide of the mark’ and denied an interest in the Wales international.

Cotterill has been linked with Cardiff a few times this season. Yesterday there were some unsubstantiated reports that the winger had agreed to join the Bluebirds, which were fueled by Cotterill being on the bench against Burton Albion in Birmingham’s last friendly.

With the start of the seasons so close, interest for players can come out of nowhere as managers desperately don’t want to be left short when the window slams shut.

Cotterill has been important for Wales in their recent qualifying campaigns and also proved himself a vital creative force for Birmingham city over the previous season.

It was reported that Cardiff were ready to tempt the winger ‘home’ as he was born close to the capital city and has family ties to the club. But it seems now that these links were misinformed.

Cardiff are trying to sign a striker and a central midfielder, equally as are Birmingham. It would seem Cotterill is not going to Cardiff and Birmingham City fans will be very pleased with that news.

Vincent Tan’s Cardiff disappointingly only managed 11th place in the Championship last year, prompting the arrival of Russell Slade in a bid to improve the former Premier League clubs status in the league.

David Cotteril is a very important player for Birmingham, making 42 appearances and scoring 9 goals since joining in June 2014.
