Birmingham City’s Match Winner

David Cotterill is an important player for Birmingham City and despite not having the best of times lately, it is a matter of time before he rekindles his match winning moments.

The Welshman, in my view, just has to start every game he is fresh for. His set-plays, goal threat and assist’s make him one of our most important attacking players.

He leads the way with 7 league assists this season. The closest to that is Paul Caddis on 4 and Stephen Gleeson on 3. With Blues not being a particularly free scoring team, Cotterill is something others need to emulate.

When we turn our attention to goals, Cotterill is again right up there. He is the second highest scorer with 7 as well. Birmingham have scored just 42 league goals in 36 games, Cotterill has been involved in 14 goals in some form or another and that isn’t counting secondary assists.

On average Cotterill supplies 3.03 key passes per game, the highest of any Birmingham player. Including Shinnie who averages just 1 per game. It is becoming clear where the creativity really lies in the team.

He is also way out in front in terms of crosses per game, averaging around 10 per game. There is no one else in the team anywhere near that.

It is of little surprise that when the right-wing wizard is on his game Birmingham at least get a draw or win the game. The recent Blackpool game, vs Brentford, Fulham and Norwich; and many of those games were so close to being huge wins for us.

Those small margins have seen Blues lose touch with the top 6 and the lofty heights of optimism, but the faith should remain. Birmingham and Cotterill are doing a monumentally impressive effort.

Thinking back to Birmingham’s fantastic run of fun, it is apparent that Cott’s played a big part in some key games for the team. And, with some hard work and a bit of luck I’m hoping the next 10 games he can find his form and we can find a very strong finish.
