West Brom are set to step up their bid to make Birmingham boss Chris Hughton their new manager according to reports.

It is expected that within a day or so the Baggies will ask Birmingham for permission to talk to Hughton who is operating at St Andrews under a one year rolling contract.

Albion have held talks with former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri and Ray Wilkins as they try to replace Roy Hodgson, but Hughton appears to be the first choice of Baggies chairman Jeremy Pearce.

Blues could refuse permission for them to talk to their man, but Hughton may start making noises himself because he could go from a club with a transfer embargo and an outcast owner to a club already in the top flight and have some financial backing to better their finishing place of 10th last season.

Hughton came close to taking over at the Hawthorns 15 months ago when a free agent after leaving Newcastle, but the Baggies chose Hodgson
