Gianfranco Zola extended a sympathetic hand to his predecessor Gary Rowett during his press conference unveiling this afternoon. The new Blues manager said – ‘I will try to speak with Gary. I will give him a call and extend my sympathies in the situation’.

The Italian also confirmed that talks were ongoing before Rowett’s departure. Zola told the press- ‘I was asked if I was interested a while ago but the phone call only came the other day’.

The 50 year-old has signed a two-and-a-half year contract at St. Andrews and admits he sees the Premier League potential in the club and described the jobĀ  as a ‘good project’.

Zola previously led Watford to the play off final before eventually succumbing to a 1-0 extra time defeat against Crystal Palace. His sights are firmly set on a top six finish once again.

If he can win the Blues fans over – the only way to do that will be by winning games – then he will be doing something right. But he will certainly have a lot to do to turn Blues into the expansive side he craves.
