Well that certainly didn’t go to plan, did it?

I did suggest that Pep Clotet should make a few changes, but I didn’t think he’d go that extreme.

Birmingham crashed out of the Carabao Cup last night as a heavily weakened side fell 3-0 to Portsmouth at Fratton Park. The amount of changes showed us what he thought of the cup competitions, so we can probably expect the same when it comes to the FA Cup in January.

Although the score-line may look disastrous, the Blues weren’t without their chances, as The Birmingham Mail put it, “[Craig] Gardner could’ve had a hat-trick from an accumulated 80 yards tonight”.

So how did the result play out on social media?

Well, a lot of fans were quite frankly disgusted with the team selection. As one person pointed out, Birmingham won the competition back in 2011, so to treat it with such ‘disrespect’ was a slap in the face to the supporters.

However, there were a few fans who were quite happy to live with the result if it meant that some of the younger players were given a little boost in their development.

  • It went exactly to plan. The plan was to get knocked out the cup so we don’t have the extra games they will beat end it there was trying to the fans but really they just don’t want the extra games. My opinion is is it was embarrassing and demoralizing to a young players. Disrespectful to Portsmouth and Birmingham City fans.

  • Youngsters were never going to score. Portsmouth put their best available side. Once our fat goalie presented them with the first goal Pompey copied our style of football. Fatso beaten again with a shinner from 20 yards and the third beggars belief. Got to get rid of this guy he’s totally demotivated. As for the ‘future’ that wont be bright if we end up in League 2. We need wins in what ever competition. Half a team would have been enough to see of this lot. NEED THE MONEY NEED THE WINS.

  • I personally think we should be refunded for last nights total disrespectful showing by the management. I thought he’d change a few players but not the whole team, it was nothing short of disgraceful, talking to other fans they were all saying they wished they’d stayed at home and watched the game on Tv.
We could have used this game as a sort of training exercise to help the senior players get used to this new team formation but instead he gives them all a night off. We need to get an experienced manager in asap but the problem is if anyone else did come in they’d have to agree to be Rens puppet.

  • Pep had to pull Vas out of the team as we had an offer from Cardiff so we didn’t have a striker on the pitch apart from Jude who is more a number 8 or 10 and although talented wasn’t going to get the better of more experienced defenders. Just one experienced striker would have made a big difference last night but we didn’t have one available.

I though the lads did really well and now Pep knows who to send out on loan for some mens football where they will learn about the things they were naive about last night, and who to keep around the first team squad. At the end of the day its club orders and Pep is quite openly saying this and seemingly agreeing with the plan.

    • So what we get from that is Pep is a Yes man with no football in brain of his own. Ren is pulling his strings. And also picking the team we have no chance if that is the case. Pep must go and we need Ten gone and a proper experienced manager in. We lost out on Puscas and it looks now that we have turned our attention to Dwight Gayle on loan. Does not saying bad the championship is probably his level but it’s very expensive it would cost almost the same as the fee for Puscas which the board decided was too much.

  • Glad I decided to stay at home and watch sky instead, almost bought a ticket but something said no. Feel sorry for the supporters that made the trip, they were a lot quieter than normal. I am sure that if the team sheet had been available well in advance of the game, a few Bluenoses may not have bothered. All for giving the kids an opportunity but far better along side a few experienced heads. It was men verses boys, felt really sorry for Craig G, he deserved a goal, he must have felt like a games master at senior school at times. Could not fault the energy and enthusiasm and there were some very slick clever passages of play from the youngsters but very little end result. The Pompey players have experienced heads, not the greatest footballers around but know all the tricks and ways to antagonize and our youngsters got sucked in. They have not been around long enough to tape over the panic button so it cant be used. So what if Vassell is leaving, we desperately needed a striker, this should be about Blues not potential sales. Obviously the caretaker manager is not worried about UK cup competitions, obviously has not been here long enough to understand how important they are to UK supporters but surely getting through the next couple of rounds would give more fringe players and youngsters the opportunity for game time.

  • I agree we should have had more experience on the pitch. And fans who travelled should as a Good Will Gesture receive a refund on their tickets at least. On a positive note “Well done Jude on your debut now the youngest Blues player to make his full debut”. Not much to take from last night’s game other than some of our younger players have good potential. If it’s true that Mr Ren is pulling all of the strings this could be a very long season – alternatively, it all works out and we progress. Undecided and won’t make an opinion on just last night’s game. Plenty of new signings to start Saturday v Bristol City, IMO start Jude with a fuller strength team on Saturday. Hoping we get value for purchasing our season tickets again. KRO see you all on Saturday. UTB.

  • stockdale ..dacres -cogley..medina …just not good enough..last nights team with gary gardner juke and dean would have won …lacked just a little more experience [ but you must give these lads a chance]

    • I hate to point fingers but Bajrami was very poor and two players I expected more of as they’ve got a bit more experience were Dacres-Cogley and Wes Harding who was totally clueless, he constantly gave the ball away and was continually dispossessed

  • We need a complete change of football style. Not the same kind of manager coming in and buying the same has been players. We need a new mixture of young, foreign and current players and a new style to playing. This manager is trying to do this!! Support him and give him time. I was there last night and clapped our boys at the end. We will get one or two gems from those. The new blues are coming !!!

  • Pep is thought a lot of by the players its said that side is ok , but he needs to sharpen up on the little we need to target an average scoring of 2 goals per game …and to do that we need to get 6 shots on target per game on average to get them or more …the cups are the easiest way into Europe so must be a most important aim for a manager ..then he has to do anything that could bring down the players confidence or incentive , or the fans faith ..I take it that playing young players last night was to so how far they have come ,.that’s okay but some of them are not ready for .such a game which could effect the club throughout …and also the fans confidence in the managerial staff which is not good for the club ..come on things are looking good let’s get on the glory trail again without any hiccups….kro
