Who steps in?

Luke Turner looks at who would be our second choice right back…

At present, Jonathan Spector is pretty comfortable playing in the right back spot for Blues and he is part of a solid back four who have an excellent defensive record this season.

However, after it was revealed that the out of favour Paul Caddis would miss the next three months of action through a dislocated shoulder, it prompts questions as to who would play right back if something happened to Spector.

The only other right back in the squad we have is young Josh Cogley. He has been playing regularly for the under-23s but would he be ready to step in for the first team?

Personally, I think he is showing a lot of potential but it would be a big jump for him to be thrown straight into the starting 11 of the first team.

He shone throughout pre-season but his only senior appearance was in an EFL Cup tie against Oxford in early August, which Blues lost 1-0.

In that game he showed signs of good things but, overall, I don’t think he impressed too much.

That’s not a criticism of him as it was his first competitive start for Blues and he was obviously anxious to impress manager Gary Rowett.

The only real alternative right back is Ryan Shotton after he played a couple of games for us in that position last season.

But, it was clear to see that the full back position is far from Shotton`s preferred spot and we have since seen how good he is at centre half.

Would Rowett want to break the partnership of Morrison and Shotton up to play the latter out of position?

This could possibly be the question he has to react to if Spector gets injured or suspended.

Cogley is obviously the only like-for-like replacement but it’s just a case of whether he’s up to meeting the demands of Championship and if he could cope.

Blues fans, who would you play at right back if Spector became unavailable?
