Birmingham City have stepped up their hunt for Torino midfielder Afriyie Acquah, according to reports in the Italian press.

The club want to complete a quick deal for the 25-year-old following their frustration at being unable to gain a work permit for Ogenyi Onazi to join earlier in the week.

Blues are awaiting the OK from the Italian club as they look for Acquah’s replacement – a deal for Godfred Donsah is pending.

It was reported that Blues had an ?8m bid rejected for Acquah last week but it now looks like Harry Redknapp has returned with intent.

The Blues boss told the Birmingham Mail yesterday that the Ghanaian has ‘always been one we’ve been after’.

  • He plays for a club in Europe so no permit needed. It will take a lot more than a permit to get him though as I believe other clubs are looking at him and we haven’t exactly had an offer accepted yet. Its another defensive midfielder so I imagine this is how Harry wants to pay it with two holding midfielders rather than the three or four we usually need to stop the opposition
