Three Premier League full backs Blues should sign in January

As every Birmingham City fan knows, despite our relatively settled back four this season of Jonathan Spector, Michael Morrison, Ryan Shotton and Jonathan Grounds, we haven’t really got too much cover in the defensive department.

With young full back Josh Dacres-Cogley likely to get a start this weekend at Griffin Park when Blues take on Brentford due to the suspension of Spector, Gary Rowett is left with just veteran defender Paul Robinson for cover and let’s face it, although he has the passion, can he really hack it at this level now? Not in my opinion he can’t.

As well as the obvious choice of signing a striker in the January transfer window it is likely that Rowett will want to sign at least one defender, maybe even two.

For that reason, I thought it would be good to have a look at three Premier League defenders who would be a great addition to the squad that we currently have.

So, down below are the three defenders who I think Blues should look to sign in the winter transfer window…

1. BEN CHILWELL – LEICESTER CITY.

The 19-year-old defender has been pushed down the pecking order at Leicester since the return of Jeffery Schlupp and a loan move away from the Premier League champions might be exactly what he is looking for.

Although there will probably be competition for his signature, Blues do have the added bonus that the teenage left back is very good friends with former Blues winger Demarai Gray who may push him in the direction of Rowett’s Blues.

Last season Chilwell played eight times for Huddersfield Town so he certainly has the knowledge of what it takes to play in the Championship so he could well be an option that Rowett is looking at.

2. MARC MUNIESA – STOKE CITY.

At 24, the former Barcelona trainee would be a fantastic addition to the Birmingham City squad. His experience of playing in the Premier League would surely be something that will be attracting plenty of interest from the Championship.

In the last week to 10 days, the Spaniard has sounded out that he would be open to a move away from the club having struggled to break into the Potters first team this campaign with just a single top flight appearance under his belt in the 2016/17 season.

Despite only signing a new four-year deal with Stoke last year, a move away from the club might be something that he is considering because of his lack of games and I think he could be a great signing if Rowett were to make a move from him.

3. JUAN CARLOS PAREDES – WATFORD.

The Ecuadorian international right back has fallen way down the pecking order at the Hornets behind Daryl Janmaat, Juan Camilo Zuniga and Brice Dja Djedje but once again his experience of playing in the Championship could prove something that attracts the attention of Mr.Rowett.

At 29 he has plenty of experience at both club and international level and with Watford looking to get him off their books he could turn out to be a very useful signing for Blues.

Despite Blues have Spector, Dacres-Cogley and Paul Caddis at their disposal, I think another right back might be on Rowett’s agenda, but would Paredes be on his hit list, potentially he could be but you never know.

Out of the three that I have highlighted, I would personally like to see the club move for Muniesa because I think he is a very stand out player who would do fantastically well in the Championship and if he was able to get the right opportunities to play for Blues then he could turn out to be a very good signing.

Blues fans, out of the three defenders that we have suggested, who would you like to see the club signing in January? Let us know in the comment section down below!
