Stephen Gleeson is widely considered one of the best distributors of the ball at Birmingham City. But despite excelling last season, the Irishman has struggled to continue that form in the first half of this season.

The 28 year-old was reportedly generating interest from top end Championship clubs one year ago after some quality performances which established his place as a first team regular at St. Andrews. Gleeson was the man who recycled the ball, kept it moving, and was a key player in Blues’ successful counter attacking style.

Fast forward to this season and it’s fair to say he hasn’t got going. His place as a regular has been called into question and it’s hard to argue his case.

Gleeson did show glimpses of his best during Gianfranco Zola’s first game in charge against Brighton, a 2-1 defeat at St. Andrews. Coincidentally, when he was withdrawn from the pitch, Blues’ midfield started to unravel such was his influence on the game.

That is where Gleeson needs to get back to on a consistent basis. You can’t question his ability or attitude, but his mentality needs to improve if he’s to be the player we witnessed last season.
