Blues manager Alex McLeish was not short of praise for his side after they beat Wigan 1-0 at the weekend and passed through the all important 40 points barrier that should see the club stay up.

The win did come about due to a softly awarded penalty, but James McFadden scored from the spot, leaving McLeish more than happy.

He said: ‘If you had said at the start of the season that we would get 40 points by March, I would have said you are having a laugh because the squad needed time to gel and develop and we had lads coming in from the Championship.

‘To get to 40 points before March is an outstanding feat from a squad that cost £10million in the summer to assemble.

‘That is amazing and it is even more amazing that we are in eighth position, but we now want to kick on and the characters in the dressing room will ensure we don’t ease up.’
