Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is hopeful that Craig Gardner could be back in action within three weeks which would give him a chance of playing in the Carling Cup tie with Aston Villa.

The midfielder was taken off in the game against Manchester City and missed the victory over Chelsea this weekend due to an ankle injury.

The full extent of the injury has not yet been revealed, but McLeish remains hopeful.

‘We are still awaiting the results coming from the specialist in London. We thought it might be worse than it actually is,’ McLeish told the Birmingham Mail.

‘We are hopeful he is only going to be out for two to three weeks, so we will await the report.

‘Whether he is out of the cup game, I don’t know. I would need to check with our doctor once we have studied the report.’
